Look Like a Rose hip!!! Must be a bug ? On the Blueberry bushes.

General    None Given

Sorry I can't get a picture! End of Season-- just noticed what looks like a big fat swelled rosehip on Blueberry plants. I think it is a leaf curled under and closed up -- big + fat- with orange/red blush color. I've had blueberry for 15 years NEVER seen this! Then noticed more of this on additional branches and on additional plants, though smaller in size. My first response is to prune this stuff out. But I don't know if it's a beneficial [or harmless] or some nasty bug infestation or other creepy problem. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I'm not sure I can exactly imagine what you are seeing, but I did come across discussion about scales on blueberries, which kind of sounds like what you might be describing?

Does this match what you are seeing?

Rob Mahler commented,
Thank you for the article Sheena, very interesting. I think it could be this issue, although the 'ovisac's were at the base of terminal leaf clusters, not exactly on the bark as pictured in the article. [I wish I had a working camera]. Meantime, I just pruned all bushes aggressively and black bagged the brush. The plants were under stress this year with drought on the East Coast. Do you think my usual spray [Dr Bronner's Pepermint soap and Neem oil] is appropriate for these fellows if I see anyone creeping about? Thanks again for your reply.

Hi Rob, sounds like you are doing the right thing with pruning followed by spraying. Hopefully this will get your blueberry bush in a good spot (health-wise) to get through the winter for next year.
