What kind of squash is this?

General    None Given

I got these plants free at my Ace garden center. I have no idea what kind they are - you can see this one, but I have others that are round and a very dark green. I picked the light green one (in the picture), but don't know if it is ripe or what to do with it. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks,
New to gardening squash

Looks like a hubbard squash! It's a winter squash so they can be stored for a while, up to several months, in cold storage. There are also several ways to preserve them.

Hubbard squash makes good puree, so you can bake with it (pies or bread), or use it in other puree-based ways (like soups, sauces, etc).
