What wrong with this leaf

General    Massachusetts

This leaf is the same around the neighborhood. We are curious as to the cause. Is it a fungus or bug ?

It could be tar spot disease on your maple. The disease is caused by several fungi in the genus Rhytisma. It causes disease in silver, sugar, red and Norway maple as well as their relative, box elder. Normally the disease is very cosmetic and doesn't cause any harmful effect on trees.

The initial symptom appear as small, light-green to yellowish-green spots on the upper surface of leaves. As the disease progress the spots enlarge and become darker. Later the spots appear as black, tar-like raised structures within these yellow spots.

Nah commented,
Thank you. Is there anything that needs to be done?

Dr. Ravishankar Narayana commented,
You can collect the infected fallen leaves and destroy them to reduce the spores for next season. Also, your neighbors should also rake and destroy infected leaves to be effective. You can also spray fungicide, but it is not feasible.

Thanks for posting and I hope that the answer by Ravi was helpful. But just so you know, we try to only answer questions about crop diseases. (Sugar maples are a crop but I think the one you have is ornamental)

thanks
