Will a habenaro plant have always the same color fruits?

Hi Daniei,

Habaneros come in a variety of colors, including red, yellow, orange, brown (burgandy/chocolate), and even white, just like other types of peppers.

If you're asking whether or not a single plant can have multiple colors of fruit, then yes, it just depends on the ripening stage. The fruit typically starts off green (or, less commonly, near-white) and could possibly progress through different shades of a certain color (orange/red/yellow are all in a related pigment pathway). Depending on the ripening stage of each individual pepper, you might have several colors on the same plant at any given time. They should eventually all end at the same color.

Although very rare, it's possible that a single branch could have mutated in the somatic cells leading to a change in the pigment pathway and a different color for the peppers on that branch only. This is often how new apple varieties arise, and I observed it once myself in a tomato plant that had a branch of yellow tomatoes while the rest were red. I also saw it in a variegated Cuban Oregano plant which, after years, grew one branch that had reverted to a solid color.

If you are growing a known variety where the color doesn't match, it may have been a mix-up when you bought it, maybe mislabeled. The color could also change if you saved seeds from an F1 hybrid whose parents happened to have two different colors which are now segregating in the F2 generation. Additionally, this can happen if you saved seeds and it accidentally crossed with another plant, and you now have your own F1 hybrid (which can also occur accidentally at the seed company/plant supplier if you bought it from the store).

Thank you for responding. So far they are all still green, with blotches of chocolate. There seems to be twice as many this year so I am waiting to see them turn bright red. Love my habenaro. Thanks you again..
