What is the cause of the mottling on this not quite ripe butternut pumpkin?

Pumpkin    None Given

This mottling appeared late in the pumpkins life. It is a curious mottling - golden brown with circular scrolling. The pumpkin itself feels quite firm. There is no softening. It's not quite ripe. What is the cause of the mottling and what can I do to ripen the pumpkin? Thank you.
