Hollow flavorless fruit

Fig    None Given

What causes hollow and flavourless fruit? The tree shows no other signs of distress.

The tree is growing in southern New Mexico on the side of an irrigation ditch that serves a permanent pasture and receives water every other week.

The hollow flavorless fruits in figs may happen for several reasons like

1. It is a shallow rooted tree need well drained and aerated soil. Water logging condition and compact soil usually affect the fruit quality.

2. Also high temperature and lack of water during summer months may result in poor quality fruits. So avoid water stress by providing mulching.

3. Another reason may be lack of nutrients. Apply compost or manure or suitable fertilizer, especially which contain high phosphorus and potassium.

4. Or it may be a male fig tree which produces fruit, but whose sole purpose is to cross-pollinate a female fig tree. These figs never ripen and are inedible. So plant new female fig tree near the male tree.
