Spodoptera litura egg hatching period

Cauliflower    None Given

I have found the egg mass of army worm Spodoptera litura on my cauliflower crop. I want to know how many days it takes egg to hatch since I am planning to spray insecticide.

First off- great work identifying the egg mass (which can be a difficult thing to do!)

The short answer is that, in the summer, it will take 2 days for the eggs to hatch.

The long answer is that caterpillar egg hatching (aka eclosion) is dependent on temperature. Research from Purdue University shows that optimal temperature range for Spodoptera litura eggs is 28-30C (82-86F). It will take eggs longer to eclose in lower temperatures.
