How to stop Black Peppermint foliage from turning green

Mint    None Given

I bought a Black Peppermint plant a few weeks ago. It's very healthy but all the new growth is green rather than the purple-black foliage it had originally. Does anybody know how to retain the darker leaves?

It will be easy for us to diagnose if you upload images of plant and leaves. Thanks

It's not a disease or anything, just a kind of reversion I guess. I'm wondering if the leaves will darken as they mature.

I believe the new foliage will always be a lighter color and while it matures they become darker. Give it time and it should grow in nicely. Either way, the flavor should be the same no matter what.

Thanks Kathryn, I'm going to leave it for now and see what happens.

Another factor is light and fertilizer. nutrient deficient plants tend to produce more alternative colors. Where I work we have found that more fertlizer (primarily N and P) means less purple from purple leaved plants. if they are in a low light situation they will also produce less anthocyanins (purple/black or brown coloration).

Thanks Gregory. I might try some in depleted soil in the future then. I've noticed the leaves aren't as pungent since I potted it on so I guess using less rich soil could help with the intensity of the smell too.
