Black Fungus or Mold? Inside Grapefruit.

Grapefruit    None Given

I love grapefruit and eat a lot of it, but I've run into this a few times now. What is it? There was no blemish or bruising to the skin of the grapefruit. This dark colored stuff looks like it grew inside somehow.

I think it is just black mold growing inside the flesh. The fungal spores may entered the fruit through microscopic opening caused by insects or physiological stress during fruit development. Generally you can cut off the infected portion and eat healthy part (but sometime the fruit will not be that much tasty). Also some molds may produce toxic substance which may cause side effects like allergy, diarrhea etc.

Thank you Ravi. It just seems so weird to me that the skin can be so thick and perfect, and that somehow these spores where able to invade the fruit. I've so much to learn about agronomy. Thanks.

Awesome picture! Though uncommon, seeds of fruit can be infected with fungi during pollination. I wouldn't eat it because this is probably Rhizopus (which has some minor toxin production), but won't hurt you if you ate the rest of the fruit.
