Major side branch split from apricot trunk

Apricot    None Given

Major branch split away from the trunk, revealing a depressed concave hole with crystalline sap. Branch sawed off cleaned out a bit, filled with mud, trunk wrapped in towel. Better to seal (large area)? Will we be able to save it?

I think using mud is mistake. It may serves as an easy entry point for pathogens and insects. Some people done bolting and sealing the splits using natural shellac wood sealer, but not sure they succeeded (http://www.gardeningblog.net/2009/12/...).

Also according to forest health specialist there is no use in saving or repairing (using tape, wrap, wire or bolt) the split trees since the injury will never heal and the attachment will always be weak. There is more chances of decaying. (http://files.dnr.state.mn.us/assistan...)

It is better to contact professional arborist and get a opinion.
