How to prevent damping-off?

General    NY

I have just lost a batch of pepper seedlings to what I think (thank you to people on here) was damping-off. I did a quick google search and found that damping-off can be caused by poorly circulating air and that I could use a fan to gently blow air around my trays. Is this a good idea? If so, can you recommend a fan that is the right power for using on my seedling and how far away should I put it?

Circulating air is not the most important thing to prevent damping off. It is a soil/water disease so the most important steps for prevention are clean water. clean soil, and clean seed. Try to have all of these components sterile so no pathogens are coming into the system early on. Good air circulation and keeping the above-soil plant parts dry is also important, but hygiene of the soil line and below are most important.

Chamomile tea has anti-fungal properties. I water in my seeds with (cooled) chamomile tea and seaweed extract and I've never had a problem with damping off.K
