Yellowing leaf edges

Banana    Florida Keys

I have two types of banana, a Saba, and an Ice Cream, both gotten and planted at a foot tall (more or less) both are growing nicely, the Saba is about 14 ft., the other about 8 ft. (the are not the same age) my problem is lately they both are getting yellowing on the leaf edges, then brown, and only the edges. Not all are older leaves either. Have provided fertilizer, with nitrogen, but wondering what more I may need. I am in the Keys (Florida) some of my other plants are having issues also, but thats for another day. Thanks in advance. Norm.

Could you upload some images of the problem Norm?

Norm, if the Keys are as wet as Central Florida (where I am) that could be the problem. We have had an unusually heavy rainy season and flooding this summer in Florida. Excessive water can cause leaf yellowing in banana plants. It displaces oxygen in the ground also and affects the roots. Since you are in Florida, here is a University of Florida link to growing bananas in the home landscape https://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/mg040 . Have you had a tremendous amount of rain during the last month?

No, matter of fact we are on water restrictions,,(I still water as needed) but not alot of excess here.

You'll need to upload some pictures like Lindsay asked - it will help a great deal.

While you are working out how to upload :), check the plant library at Plant Village and see if any of the pictures or any of the symptoms correspond to what you are seeing with your bananas.

Leaves with yellowing/browning that spreads inward from the outer margins may be infected with anthracnose or fungal leaf spot diseases. Usually, having the infected foliage diagnosed is the best method for determining whether fungicides can stop your disease issues. Also, good sanitation, like cleaning the area around the banana plants can help reduce the spread of disease.

Norm Lynch commented,
Thank you Megan for answering my question, it is probably a good idea if I can figure a way to send the leaf off, getting it there semi fresh, but I am going to check into it. Thank you once again. Norm

If the yellowing and subsequent browning is occurring only around the edge of the leaf then the plant may be lacking magnesium. You might dry applying a small amount of dolomite lime to the soil or alternatively spray the leaves with a mild mixture of water and epsom salts. A good garden center should stock dolomite lime and be able to recommend how much to apply.
