Lavender transplant now dead

Lavender    United States

I planted an already mature lavender plant alongside a patch of my house in between some stones used for landscaping, and two rose bushes. The rose bushes have survived (but the blooms keep dying) yet a couple weeks into its new location, all lavender leaves have drooped or dried out and pretty much look dead to me. The soil is loamy but moist, mulched, and gets at least 5-6 hours of sun per day. We have been religious in watering these plants and i cannot figure out what caused it to die. I'd like to have an idea before planting a replacement. Thanks! ( I am in Zone 9)

Hi, you say this is a mature lavender plant...does that mean it was actively growing (not dormant) at the time of transplant? Was the plant potted or was it dug up and relocated? Lavender is not tolerant of too much soil moisture especially if the crown (place on the plant where the roots meet the main stem) is waterlogged. Many people make the mistake of planting the crown at or below soil level when it needs to be much higher. "We plant up on mounds, not down in holes" is something of a mantra for us. And while lavender can be divided and transplanted easily in the winter, it doesn't like roots being disturbed during the growing season. I'm also not sure about the sunlight...I'm in zone 9 as well and lavender is a full sun 6-10 hours a day type of plant. It may have succumbed to a combination of factors....but I'm betting a waterlogged crown was the mail culprit.

Thanks! I will keep that mantra in mind! It was a potted lavender plant i assumed was growing since it looked mature. Not sure on that, though.

Sounds like too much water. Lavender needs excellent drainage.

Hi, thanks for the reply. How can that be, though. The soil is very loamy and has excellent drainage. The roses juxtaposed to the lavender a few feet away are in the same soil and doing quite well...
