How can I prevent vine borers on zucchini?

Squash    NC

They are a persistent problem for me in my garden. Would row covers work? I love zucchini and I don't want to stop growing it.

diatomaceous earth- sprinkle some at the base of the plant when it starts to get thicker than a pencil, it will wash off in the rain, so reapply after rain. The material is sharp and cuts up their soft bodies before they can get into the plant and kill it. It is not a chemical pesticide, it is mechanical.

Row covers work. Pin them tightly to the ground and remove them once you see blossoms on the plants. By then the clear winged squash vine borer moth has found more accessible plants to lay her eggs at the base of and the threat is pretty much gone.
