Companion cropping corn with beans

Bean

Has anybody ever tried planting corn and beans? I'm thinking the three sisters minus one, allowing pole beans to freely climb the corn. I've heard mixed reviews so I'd like to get some advice on this before trying it if possible. If you have tried it, what spacing did you use?

I've done this, and it works great. I used the spacing listed on the corn package, with a little extra space between the rows. You will want to plant the corn a couple of weeks ahead of the beans to give it a head start. Otherwise the beans will be taller than the corn.

Good luck!

That's really good to know, did you see any great differences in yield compared with growing separately?

Yes, the beans did have a lower yield since they didn't get as much sun as they would have alone. But overall for the space used I was satisfied. Beans are pretty prolific.
