Pickling cucumbers

Cucumber    NY

I would love to grow some varieties of cucumber to pickle this year. Can anybody recommend a tasty variety to grow and perhaps share your pickling recipe?

I like Country Fair myself. Have you grown cucumbers before? It can be difficult to get enough fruit ready for harvest at the same time to merit making a batch of pickles. If it gets too hot, you will need to make sure the plants are getting enough water as this can seriously stress cucumbers and the fruits may not grow properly. I've also had serious aphid problems on my cucumbers... and wilt, look out for wilt!

'County Fair' is good and quite similar to 'Burpee's Picklebush' - compact plants, very prolific and produce a flush of cucumbers at once. Both varieties tend to decline in hot weather, and are not long season dependable. They also seem to be prone to spider mite infestations, but the good traits outweighs the bad. Recipes? I have had good success with the Ball canning recipes.
