Not so hot Jalapenos

Chilli Pepper

Nice to see a page for hot peppers on here. I have a question that I'm sorta posting on behalf of a friend. He said he grew some jalapenos up last year but the peppers were very mild and didn't have the heat that they ought to. I've never had this happen before and I'd really like to know what caused it. Any thoughts? Thanks, Bill

One other thing on peppers: giving them lots of water and care can lower the "heat," in my experience. I've grown jalepenos from the same seed package in different places and had their spiciness vary considerably.

Water it a little less, give it less fertilizer, let it stress out a bit... and the heat is likely to increase. You can use the same methods to increase the tastiness of tomatoes. It concentrates the flavor.

There are several varieties of mild jalapenos available and it could be that your friend simply grew a variety developed for a more mild flavor. Would he happen to know which variety it was?
Another possibility is excess nitrogen - this can cause a pepper to have less heat than it otherwise would.
