Pruning crab apple trees

Apple    York, UK

My wife and I have inherited two apple trees in our new garden. They are growing next to the house and we know NOTHING about gardening. They are at least 10ft tall. A friend of ours said we should prune them over the winter. Is this true? No idea how or when to do this, any help greatly appreciated. John

Crab apple trees are fairly easy to maintain. Especially if they are well established as yours is. I would advise you not to listen to the advice you were given unless you have a specific issue with the growth of the tree. If the tree requires any pruning it should be done in early spring. Pruning now may result in less flowers and fruit later in the year and unless you have a specific problem or just want to thin the tree canopy you should probably just leave it alone. Here is a plant profile from the Royal Horticultural Society to get you started: http://apps.rhs.org.uk/plantselector/...

David Hughes commented,
I recall seeing a great video by Dr Renae Moran at Maine Extension service advocating cutting in winter which is what we did last year. We got no fruit but that was due to the late frost but for sure the pruning reduced the number of flowers as well. Anyway, check out the video. I have written to Renae and asked her to provide her advice too
