What is the cause of the discoloration of the leaves and what should I do?

Hazelnut (filbert)    None Given

Since the trees were planted 6 months ago (in the Southern Hemisphere) the leaves have had brown edges. The trees have definitely been receiving enough water. In fact I'm more concerned that the roots may have had too much water because the soil was unusually moist throughout our southern hemisphere summer. I'm watering less now. Otherwise the trees look ok with catkins appearing and new green leaves appearing as well. Though the overall growth of all three planted trees seems slow. I can post some photos if you like. Thank you, Jack.

It looks like potassium deficiency. The symptoms include leaves show characteristic marginal scorching (bronzing) and may show necrotic (chlorotic brown) spots in between the veins.

You can apply recommended quantity of muriate of potash or wood ash.

Thank you Ravi. I'll go and get some. If these identical features appear on other plants does that also suggest a potassium deficiency? For example on rose bushes? Jack

Yes most of the potassium deficient plants will have similar pattern of symptoms i.e., marginal scorching (bronzing). Please see the attached plant nutrient deficiency guide for more information. http://www.mgofmc.org/docs/nutrientde...

Dear Ravi, Thank you for that helpful information and those very useful looking charts! I've bought some potassium sulphate powder, dissolved it and watered the prescribed amount around the hazel nut trees. It rained last night so that should get it into the soil. We'll see what happens! I've also added an image here for something quite different. Perhaps I ought to give it a separate post? We've grown some butternut pumpkins. I'm puzzled by the brown and rather curious looking mottling on one or two of the pumpkins. Here is the picture - a mottled pumpkins next to a normal one. What do you think it is? Jack
